I’m no stranger to the world of luxury, yet I am at the same time. Fashion is just something I know; thanks to my mom. For a Package Design class, good ol’ Professor Lambert gave us the task of creating a package for an everyday item. I received the honor of working with a thumbtack. The twist? It had to be luxurious. So me being a fashionista, I started brainstorming and created a moodboard to better grasp the concept I wanted to go for.
After finally visualizing how I would go about this idea, I opened illustrator and created geometric designs. The 2x2 cube consisted of small squares on each corner on all faces except the top and bottom with designs in each one. As someone who pays really close attention to detail and tries to get everything as perfect as can be, I struggled to figure out the composition of some designs and content. With useful feedback from peers during a class critique, I managed to make up my mind on how I wanted my designs to harmonize with content. Texture played a huge role in making this work really stand out as luxurious, sure I can give credit to the luxurious logo design but texture was the real MVP of the project. The squares are a metallic texture and the designs on them were given an embossed texture. The same goes for the metallic plates containing texts. As for the rest of the space, a suede texture was created in Photoshop and then brought into illustrator. With the help of curiosity and a couple of YouTube tutorials, I can confidently say that if this earring thumbtack made from Rhodium went on shelves, it would sell: at least some of them would.
